A few months ago, to compliment my Google Maps skills, I started looking into OpenStreetMap trying to go beyond my basic understanding of what it is, what it does and how it can be used. As I was exploring it I came across many new terms and ideas that are linked to OSM and contribute to making the OSM stack. I knew I had to look into these various facets at some point so I started a list. The list grew longer and longer, and though I was making progress and starting to have a better understanding of what the “OSM world” is, I wanted to be able to picture it. I wanted a graphical way to represent OSM because a simple list didn’t cut it. I wanted to see the connections between each component. I couldn’t find anything online (please do let me know if something exists), so I started building this mind map – an OpenStreeMap stack visualisation of sorts.
I made this primarily to help myself learn but I thought it’d be great if it could be useful to someone else starting with OpenStreetMap, or even to people working with OSM regularly.
Of course, it doesn’t and can’t include everything. I had to draw the line somewhere. Insights from people who have been working in the OSM sphere for longer than me would be greatly appreciated. Are there any glaring omissions? Or anything that shouldn’t be included at all? Could some of the branches be merged, linked or rearranged to be closer to other ones?
I made this with MindNode Lite, which works ok and is free but has its limitations. So I’m all ears on alternatives you can recommend. Ideally, I’d like a digital version with hyperlinks and a definition for each term, as well as a print version that is cleaner and has only keywords, with maybe some whitespace around the edges to add personal notes. I’d also like to create connections between branches.
Here is Version 1 (pdf) here. Please send me your feedback, comments, suggestions, critiques. Leave a comment or email me, print it, scribble on it, scan it and send it back if you want.
If someone wants to contribute and collaborate on it, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
